    Technology of desulphurization of cast iron with granulated magnesium

    Desulfurization of pig iron is a process of reducing its sulfur content, which is an important requirement in steel production. The desulfurization operation is carried out at the tap and after tapping the pig iron from the furnace in the ladle furnace unit.

    At modern metallurgical plants, the presence of departments for off-blast iron desulfurization is mandatory. Desulfurization of pig iron is especially relevant with a high sulfur content in coking coals and, as a consequence, in coke and pig iron.

    Desulfurization leads to several positive results at once, the main ones being increased efficiency of blast furnace production, increased supply of high-quality pig iron and castings from it, and expanded production of high-quality steels.

    The use of magnesium as a desulfurizer allows reducing the sulfur content in pig iron to 0.002–0.010%. At the same time, magnesium consumption is minimal.

    JSC “Titanium Institute” has a modern advanced technology for desulphurization of cast iron with granulated magnesium.

    ADVANTAGES OF THE TECHNOLOGY

    • achieving a final sulfur content of 0.002–0.010%;
    • increasing the degree of desulfurization during the processing of cast iron at low temperatures;
    • low specific costs for processing cast iron due to low magnesium consumption- 1.1–1.4 kg/kg sulfur;
    • minimum loss of temperature of cast iron during processing – 5–10 °C;
    • reducing the duration of extra-furnace treatment by approximately 2 times;
    • reducing the amount of slag formed by 3–10 times;
    • fully automating the process.

    • More than 30 completed projects for the introduction of the technology of hot metal desulphurization with granulated magnesium and the execution of design works for the construction of sections at metallurgical enterprises of the PRC, including the Beijing, Wuhan, Taiyuan, Tangshan, Xiangtan, Handan and many other metallurgical plants.
    • Participation in the development of a project for a hot metal desulphurization unit with granulated magnesium for a plant in Burma by order of Tekhnika Marketing Service CJSC, Republic of Cyprus.
    • Organization of the unit and process of hot metal desulphurization with granulated magnesium at a metallurgical plant in the Union of Myanmar by order of TM Crane-Export Limited, Republic of Cyprus.
