Granulated magnesium has been widely used as the main desulphurizing reagent for blast-furnace pig iron since the beginning of its industrial production and up to the present day.
In the early 2000s, the Ukrainian technology of pig iron desulphurization became widespread in the world, especially in metallurgical plants in China, due to the use of granulated magnesium in a salt shell.
A distinctive feature of this process is the dispersion of liquid magnesium (or its alloys) and cooling of granules in an air atmosphere without the use of inert gases. This became possible as a result of selecting the appropriate geometric parameters of the centrifugal granulator, the method of feeding metal to the granulator and the composition of the salt melt – spherodisator.
